According to transaction data from fintech firm Ramp, OpenAI is significantly ahead in capturing enterprises’ AI spending. Ramp’s AI Index, which utilizes Ramp’s card and bill pay data to gauge business adoption of AI products, reported that 32.4% of U.S. businesses subscribed to OpenAI’s AI models, platforms, and tools as of April, an increase from 18.9% in January and 28% in March.
Meanwhile, competitors lag in similar advancements. Ramp’s data indicates that 8% of businesses subscribed to Anthropic’s products as of last month, up from 4.6% in January. Google AI saw a decline, with subscriptions dropping from 2.3% in February to 0.1% in April.
Ramp Economist Ara Kharzian noted that OpenAI is acquiring customers faster than any other business on Ramp’s platform. The Ramp AI Index highlights that business adoption of OpenAI is growing at a faster pace than that of its competitors.
However, Ramp’s AI Index has limitations, as it analyzes only a sample of corporate spend data from approximately 30,000 companies and may overlook costs categorized differently. Nonetheless, the data suggests OpenAI is solidifying its position in the expanding enterprise AI market.
In April, OpenAI reported having over 2 million business users, up from 1 million in September. The company anticipates significant contributions to its revenue from enterprise clients and projects $12.7 billion in revenue this year, with an expectation of $29.4 billion by 2026.
Despite not expecting to be cash-flow positive until 2029, OpenAI is considering charging business customers substantial fees for specialized AI “agents” intended to assist with software engineering and research tasks.
