It’s easy for people to lose time while browsing the internet, often getting caught up in social media, YouTube’s recommended content, or continuous streams of negative news stories. Although the negative effects of excessive screen time are well-known, recognizing the issue and taking action to address it are separate challenges.
To promote a healthier interaction with the web and computers, browser developer Opera has introduced a new browser named Opera Air. Available for Windows and macOS, its purpose is to actively enhance users’ well-being by encouraging them to take breaks, engage in exercises, and practice meditation.
The concept behind Opera Air focuses on enhancing the user experience by redesigning the browser interface with rounded corners and frosted glass effects, described by Opera as embodying a “minimalist Scandinavian design.” This approach is intended to make browsing as relaxing and gentle as possible, though user experience may still depend on the websites they visit.
Mohamed Salah, Opera’s senior director of product, stated, “The web is beautiful, but it can be chaotic and overwhelming. We decided to look at science-backed ways to help our users navigate it in a way that makes them feel and function better.” The browser offers users the option of calming background sounds, exercises, and configurable reminders to take breaks at regular intervals. Opera anticipates further enhancements as the current version is in “early access.”
In the development phase, Opera conducted a survey among 7,000 participants from seven countries. The survey revealed that 58 percent of the respondents sometimes feel overwhelmed or stressed while browsing, and 83 percent expressed a desire for a web browser that could improve their well-being during daily usage.
Setting up Opera Air is a quick process, involving the selection of a calming wallpaper backdrop from a variety of images and looping videos. Users can also import data such as bookmarks and browsing history from other browsers.
Following setup, users are introduced to the Speed Dial quick links page, a feature adapted from the main Opera browser. Familiar aspects of Opera, like workspace selection for organizing groups of tabs and integrations with Aria AI, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp, are retained in Opera Air.
