On Monday, a bug reportedly caused game art backgrounds on the PlayStation 5 dashboard to be replaced by promotional messages and news posts for some users. These images included promotions for discounts that had long expired and advertisements for new games.
Users expressed their dissatisfaction on forums and social media, highlighting that the game art previously displayed when a game was highlighted had been replaced. Instead, an image intended for a news post appeared behind games such as Miles Morales, Hi-Fi Rush, and Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Daniel Hiatt, the product lead for Game Hub and Activity Suggestions at PlayStation, acknowledged the issue in a now-deleted post, describing it as a "(new) bug with an existing feature." By 6 PM ET on the same day, the issue was resolved, as confirmed by checks on several PS5 consoles. The @AskPlayStation account on X also confirmed the fix, stating:
"A tech error with the Official News feature on the PS5 console has since been resolved. There have been no changes to the way game news is displayed on PS5."
A staff member from The Verge shared screenshots of the temporary issue, including one highlighting a launch discount for Animal Well, which ended months ago (the game was released in May and reviewed by The Verge).
There were extensive discussions about the change on Reddit and Resetera. With the reversion of the bug, topics of debate among users have returned to other issues like the PS5 Pro, game review scores, and the performance of the game Concord.
