Raspberry Pi and Sony Create AI-Powered Camera Module

Raspberry Pi and Sony have collaboratively developed a new Raspberry Pi AI Camera module, set to launch today at a price of $70. This device features onboard AI processing to assist Raspberry Pi users in effortlessly creating “edge AI solutions that process visual data,” as stated by the computer manufacturer.

This AI camera is compatible with all Raspberry Pi single-board computers, integrating the Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller chip with Sony’s IMX500 image sensor, which is responsible for the AI processing. This integration negates the necessity for additional components such as accelerators or a graphics processing unit (GPU), commonly required for camera modules to manage extensive visual data.

The Raspberry Pi AI Camera, boasting a 12.3 megapixel sensor, can capture footage at either 10 frames per second at a resolution of 4056 x 3040 or 40 frames per second at 2028 x 1520. It also features manually adjustable focus, a 76-degree field of view, and dimensions of 25 x 24 x 11.9mm, mirroring the size of the Camera Module 3 that Raspberry Pi introduced last year.
