OpenAI is anticipating a significant change in the source of its computing power over the next five years, according to a report by The Information. By 2030, OpenAI expects that 75% of its data center capacity will be derived from Stargate, a project projected to receive substantial financial backing from SoftBank, one of OpenAI’s latest financial partners. This marks a notable shift away from Microsoft, currently OpenAI’s largest shareholder and primary provider of its computing resources.
The transition, however, will not be immediate. OpenAI plans to increase its investment in Microsoft-owned data centers over the coming years. During this period, OpenAI’s overall expenses are anticipated to rise significantly. The Information notes that OpenAI projects to expend $20 billion in cash in the year 2027, a substantial increase from the $5 billion it reportedly spent in 2024. By 2030, it is predicted that OpenAI’s expenses related to running AI models, known as inference, will surpass its expenditure on training AI models.
