Liang Wenfeng, the founder of the Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, is expected to meet with China’s top political figures, including the country’s leader, Xi Jinping, during an upcoming summit anticipated to include Alibaba founder Jack Ma. The summit could take place as early as next week and may signify the Chinese Communist Party’s intention to adopt a more favorable approach toward domestic private-sector companies, according to Bloomberg. Previously, in 2020, Chinese authorities effectively blocked Alibaba from proceeding with what could have been the largest public offering in history.
Liang, who established DeepSeek in 2023 as a branch of his quantitative hedge fund, High-Flyer, gained significant attention the previous month. This recognition came after DeepSeek’s AI models, which were made publicly accessible, demonstrated impressive performance against leading models from American AI companies, including OpenAI. U.S. officials have expressed concerns about the rapidly growing popularity of DeepSeek’s models and services, viewing them as a potential challenge to the U.S.’s leading position in the AI industry.
