The Avocado Green Mattress served as an introduction to organic mattresses for the reviewer, who tested nearly a dozen others and still favors it personally.
Avocado’s mattresses, made in the USA, focus on using GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic wool, and GOTS-certified organic cotton, which are organic, nontoxic, and eco-friendly. While the sustainable materials and eco-friendly construction initially appealed to the reviewer, the standout feature was the comfort provided by Avocado’s mattresses.
Construction and Materials
Avocado offers several mattress options, including the original Avocado Green Mattress, a Luxury version that incorporates hemp for a plusher feel, and a more affordable Eco version. Additionally, Avocado produces a vegan mattress that mirrors the original but omits the use of wool.
One distinguishing feature of the Avocado Green Mattress is its use of high-quality organic and sustainable materials. The mattress utilizes 100 percent Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified latex sourced from organic rubber trees. Although processing rubber into latex presents challenges regarding maintaining an all-organic process, Avocado adheres to standards set by GOLS, including limits for harmful substances and testing emission levels.
The latex core significantly contributes to the mattress’s comfort by conforming to body contours without the sinking sensation commonly associated with memory foam. Organic latex offers support and softness similar to foam but without the accompanying chemicals. The firm version of the mattress features organic Dunlop latex, consisting of over 95 percent certified organic material, while the plush model uses softer Talalay latex.
Organic latex’s hypoallergenic properties make it suitable for individuals with allergies triggered by indoor pollutants like mold, mildew, and dust mites, which are less prevalent than in chemical foams.
Avocado further minimizes chemical use by incorporating organic wool as a natural flame retardant, thereby eliminating the need for harmful chemicals or synthetic fire barriers. Wool also aids in regulating body temperature, ensuring warmth in winter and coolness in summer.
