Review: Wahl Peanut Li – A Cordless Version of a Classic

The effectiveness of each trimmer was evaluated using a horsehair broom to mimic the challenges of trimming the thickest beards. The traditional corded Peanut trimmer tends to clog when used on a horsehair broom, or its human equivalent. In contrast, the new Peanut Li demonstrates enhanced power. Its motor, with its higher revolutions per minute (rpm), proved difficult to bog down entirely.

Wahl engineers have noted that to conserve battery life, the Peanut Li does not always operate at full power. When comparing both trimmers side by side, it is apparent from the pitch and vibration that the Peanut Li automatically runs at a lower speed than the corded version unless it encounters a tougher task. The corded Peanut still offers a smoother shave with fewer instances of hair pulling when used for shaving and detailing the neck.

The Peanut Li’s ability to increase power only when necessary is a testament to thoughtful engineering. However, this feature may compromise its effectiveness in trimming lighter stubble.

The Peanut Li is characterized as a more advanced device compared to its predecessor. It incorporates electronics, sensors, and various charging options. It excels at trimming thicker beards more efficiently than the original corded version and has a sleek, aerodynamic design with a fashionable blue color. The trimmer includes a light display indicating battery levels, alerting users in advance when it requires charging. Additionally, the Peanut Li operates slightly quieter than the corded version.

The original corded Peanut maintains its classic appeal due to its simplicity, featuring minimal points of failure. This simplicity contributes to its longevity, with many users experiencing a decade or more of consistent performance, particularly among barbers. Its rotary motor is likened to the durability of an old Honda engine.

While the blade and motor remain consistent—a gentle buzz that avoids neck nicks—the Peanut Li represents a modern evolution of beard trimmers.

There arises a consideration of why the Peanut Li offers only four guards, a nod to the simplicity of the classic Peanut. The absence of additional features such as edgers, extra guard lengths, or microgradations for expert fades is noted, potentially as a missed opportunity. Wahl appears to be banking on its established brand reputation, possibly appealing to longtime Peanut users by maintaining outward simplicity while incorporating modern sensor and electronic advancements internally.

The Peanut Li, unlike its predecessor, the previous cordless Peanut, is a legitimate upgrade in terms of capability. Its ability to match the durability of the original remains to be seen over time. Ultimately, when choosing a trimmer for travel, it is likely that users will opt for the Peanut Li.
