Sam Altman’s Crypto Project Unveils New Orb and Name

World, formerly known as Worldcoin, is the cryptocurrency and human identity network co-founded by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. With its recent rebranding, World has introduced an updated version of its eyeball-scanning device, the Orb. This device is designed to address the emerging challenge of verifying human identity “in the age of AI.”

Individuals who register with the system receive a World ID, which allows them to prove their human identity securely and anonymously online. Additionally, they gain access to a share of the associated WLD cryptocurrency token.

The new version of the Orb is constructed using 30 percent fewer components compared to its predecessor, making it more cost-effective and easier to produce. It is also integrated with Nvidia’s Jetson platform for robotics and AI. Rich Heley, Chief Device Officer at Tools for Humanity, the foundation behind the World project, mentioned at a recent event that the simplified design is intended to facilitate wider distribution of the Orb.

Heley emphasized the need for a significant increase in the number of Orbs to achieve global accessibility. To this end, World plans to scale up production and offer individuals the option to purchase or rent an Orb to verify unique human identities within their communities.

Additionally, World is launching a service named “Orb on Demand,” allowing users to order Orbs for delivery, akin to a pizza delivery service. The rollout of the Orb will expand to more countries, including Costa Rica, Brazil, Indonesia, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and Morocco.

As of now, World reports having verified nearly 7 million unique individuals, despite ongoing privacy concerns regarding the creation of a privately-operated global biometric database.
