Smart home gadgets have expanded significantly in recent years, allowing users to control everything from garage doors to individual light bulbs. With advancements in smart technology, front doors have been equipped with smart locks, video doorbells, and sensors to monitor their status. Home Depot has now introduced a new addition: a smart door featuring a smart glass window.
Manufactured by Feather River and powered by Home Depot’s Hubspace platform, this smart door is available for purchase on Home Depot’s website starting today. The smart glass window can be powered via a USB-C connection or with the included battery.
This smart door is not Home Depot’s first venture into the market of smart doors, but it is the most cost-effective option to date, with prices ranging from $798 to $998 depending on the window size. According to the company, this price range is competitive for a front door with a large window, particularly one that offers controllable transparency.
The main feature of the Smart Glass door is its ability to toggle the opacity of the window—a function similar to controlling a light bulb. The opacity can be managed through the Hubspace app or by using voice commands via Amazon Alexa or Google Nest. This means the window can switch between clear for visibility and natural light or frosted for privacy. With this feature, homeowners no longer have to choose between only one window style for their door.
Hubspace, Home Depot’s smart-home ecosystem, launched in 2021 and offers functionalities typical of other smart-home applications. It allows users to control their devices, set schedules, and establish routines. Despite being relatively new, Hubspace has been noted for its ease of use and compatibility with popular voice assistants.
The Smart Glass door’s construction includes paintable fiberglass, a composite window, and decorative panels at the bottom, giving it a contemporary appearance. It is available in four window size options, with prices varying based on the coverage of smart glass. The model with a small, Craftsman-style window is priced at $798, while the options with larger windows (three-quarter and full-size) are both $998.
This product addresses the privacy concerns homeowners may have about large windows in front doors. While there is aesthetic value in having a large window, security can be a concern. The Smart Glass door provides a solution by allowing for both visibility and privacy. Users can let in light and enjoy views of their yard while preventing unwanted visibility from outside.
The door is designed to work on both battery power and USB-C if an outlet is available near the hinge. The battery can last approximately two months, depending on usage. In cases where Wi-Fi connectivity is lost, Bluetooth can be used to control the door. If power is lost entirely, the door defaults to opaque mode, ensuring privacy until power is restored.
