The role of gut microbiota in inflammation of the prostate gland.

A recent research paper published in Aging Volume 15, Issue 20, entitled “Tissue immunoexpression of IL-6 and IL-18 in aging men with BPH and MetS and their relationship with lipid parameters and gut microbiota-derived short chain fatty acids” explores the link between benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), metabolic syndrome (MetS), and inflammation. The study, conducted by researchers from Poland’s Pomeranian Medical University and State University of Applied Sciences, focused on whether diagnostic lipid parameters for metabolic syndrome and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are related to the immunoexpression of interleukins in prostate tissue with benign hyperplasia. Their findings indicated that lipid disorders in aging men with BPH could increase inflammation in the prostate gland, with the gut microbiota playing a potential role in creating an inflammatory microenvironment.

The study aimed to assess the relationship between lipid parameters, gut microbiota-derived short chain fatty acids, and the immunoexpression of interleukins in prostate tissue with benign hyperplasia in aging men. The researchers analyzed the tissue immunoexpression of two proinflammatory interleukins, IL-6 and IL-18, which are known to be involved in the development of BPH. Their results showed that aging men with BPH and MetS had a significantly higher overall percentage of IL-6+ cells in the stroma of the prostate, as well as a significantly higher percentage of cells with strong IL-18 expression in the glandular part of the prostate. These findings suggest a potential connection between gut microbiota, lipid parameters, and inflammation in prostate glands in aging men with BPH and MetS, with implications for further research in this area.

The implications of this study are significant, as it sheds light on the potential role of the gut microbiota and lipid disorders in contributing to inflammation in the prostate gland of aging men with BPH.
