The dynamics of social networking have significantly shifted recently. Two years ago, Elon Musk initiated the transition of Twitter into what is now known as X. This transformation led many former users to seek new platforms, such as Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, and even legacy platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
Within a specific organization, there was curiosity regarding where team members currently seek their social networking experiences or if they have disengaged from social media. Several team members shared their current preferences.
Jay Peters, a news editor, observed the fragmentation of microblogging social networks, noting that no single platform has emerged to replace Twitter as the “One Central Place.” Despite finding X less than ideal, Jay continues to monitor it for updates from notable figures and companies. Jay finds Bluesky more enjoyable but lacks sufficient interaction there. If compelled to choose one platform, Jay would select Bluesky but anticipates maintaining a presence across multiple networks.
Allison Johnson, a reviewer, praises the Washington Trails Association app’s trip reports as an exemplary social network. This app provides valuable information about hikes, effectively creating a community that offers useful insights without negative interactions.
Barbara Krasnoff, reviews editor, acknowledges using multiple social networks without establishing a favorite. Barbara remains on Facebook for personal connections and is attempting to incorporate Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon in daily routines, while actively managing time on TikTok.
Kate Cox, a senior producer, yearns for the previous versions of social media platforms like Twitter, LiveJournal, and AOL. Kate has settled into Bluesky for public social interaction but prefers the intimacy of smaller, private Discord channels to discuss interests without the negative aspects of public discourse.
Emma Roth, a news writer, appreciates Facebook for its role in connecting with local communities and staying updated on local events after relocating. While still using X for real-time news, Emma is exploring the use of Threads and Bluesky.
Adi Robertson, a senior editor covering tech and policy, transitioned from Twitter to Bluesky, finding it to offer a low-pressure environment compared to Mastodon. Adi also appreciates Tumblr’s unique community for its collaborative and creative culture, absent in other platforms.
Jennifer Pattison Tuohy, a smart home reviewer, reflects on her diminishing interest in social media. Despite occasionally using Discord for work-related interactions, Jennifer has shifted her focus to more personal communication methods like iMessage and WhatsApp.
Sean Hollister, a senior editor, utilizes Threads primarily for sharing videos and highlights its browser-friendly features. While maintaining accounts on Mastodon and X, Sean considers the future of those platforms depending on user experience and changes implemented by their operators.
