Top 5 Sparkling Water Makers for 2024

The carbonation trend is currently experiencing a resurgence. There is a notable fascination with hard seltzers such as White Claw and its myriad of imitations, as well as “better-for-you” sodas like Poppi and Olipop. Consumers are increasingly drawn to beverages that offer a crisp, bubbly sensation. This trend is accompanied by a desire to minimize sugary sodas and opt for healthier options, such as simple seltzers or sparkling water.

However, concerns have arisen regarding the health implications of these beverages, which often contain “forever” chemicals known as PFAS. A study conducted by Consumer Reports in 2020 revealed that carbonated water products are more likely to contain high levels of PFAS compared to still water products. This issue affects several well-known brands whose ingredient lists might appear deceptively simple, primarily consisting of carbonated water. Producing carbonated beverages at home is one solution to avoiding exposure to these chemicals.

When considering the cost-effectiveness of making soda at home, it is noted that it is more environmentally sustainable than purchasing bottled carbonated drinks. However, the need to regularly replace CO2 canisters—which cost between $17 and $30 each for a 60-liter canister—can offset any potential savings. Some brands offer recycling programs that allow consumers to exchange empty canisters for full ones, which was a factor in testing.

Carbonators themselves are relatively simple devices, requiring a CO2 source and a method for infusing the gas into water. Testing involved using filtered water through a Zero Water filter to evaluate ease of use and the quality of the resulting sparkling water. Most devices produced satisfactory fizzy water, though some required more effort in terms of inserting CO2 canisters or attaching bottles, while others operated smoothly and efficiently.
