A recent article discussed why the Nintendo 64 controller was poorly designed, challenging any nostalgic memories. In contrast, the GameCube controller is considered one of Nintendo’s finest joypads, showcasing significant improvement over just one console generation.
Released alongside the GameCube in 2001, the controller refined the inputs from its predecessor, the N64. The main thumbstick and D-Pad were designed for easy access, and the four C-buttons were transformed into a C-stick, providing better camera control with an additional thumbstick. The N64’s awkwardly placed Z-trigger was replaced with a more conveniently located Z-button on the right shoulder trigger, while the left and right triggers were ergonomically shaped to fit players’ fingers comfortably.
The GameCube controller introduced unique design elements, such as the prominently sized A button encircled by the B, X, and Y buttons—the latter two reappearing for the first time since the SNES. Despite its asymmetrical appearance, the design functioned effectively. In several games, including Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Metroid Prime, the large A button served as a reminder of the prevalence of primary face buttons in game controls and the possibility of streamlining inputs.
Overall, this controller was highly ergonomic, providing a more comfortable grip than its predecessor, aligning with the typical human hand structure. The subsequent WaveBird model, introduced a year later, further advanced the GameCube’s controller by offering a wireless option, eliminating the need for cords in console gaming.
Although the GameCube was not the first console to implement a cordless controller—the Atari 2600 holds that distinction—the WaveBird made wireless functionality more practical. Previous controllers often used infrared technology, which required a direct line of sight, rendering them unreliable. Other wireless attempts, like Intel’s wireless PC controller from 1999, necessitated bulky base stations for operation.
