Top iPhones to Purchase in 2024

Apple’s newly released iPhones are available, but the much-anticipated Apple Intelligence features are not included. These AI enhancements are scheduled to launch with iOS 18.1 in October and will offer functionalities such as notification summaries and generative AI-powered writing tools. While these are considered standard offerings at this stage, Apple has indicated that more advanced features will be released through 2025.

The introduction of iOS 18.1 places the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro in a unique situation, as Apple Intelligence remains in development. This circumstance raises the timeless question of whether this is the year to upgrade devices.

For potential buyers, overall value is a critical consideration. The most expensive iPhone is not necessarily the best choice for everyone. The ideal balance is to find features that fulfill most user needs at an optimal price, which might include considering last year’s models.

Battery life is another crucial factor, varying significantly across different iPhone models mainly due to size. Consumers typically desire a full-day battery life, and recommendations are based on this expectation.

Screen size preferences differ among users, with some favoring smaller phones and others preferring larger displays. Consequently, Apple’s offerings cater to both preferences.

Despite the attention on AI developments, the advice remains the same: retain the existing phone if new features like a camera button, updated photo processing, or incremental performance upgrades are not appealing. For users considering replacing older models such as the iPhone 11 or 12, there are indeed significant improvements to be gained from the new models, especially in the standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, regardless of AI capabilities.

Apple’s baseline iPhone now has a 6.1-inch screen, a dual-camera setup in a new vertical arrangement, a customizable Action Button, and a new Camera Control button. It will gradually receive AI software updates under the Apple Intelligence initiative.

The iPhone 16 received significant hardware updates, aligning more closely with the Pro series. Its features include the Action Button and Camera Control from last year’s Pro models. Internally, it hosts the A18 chipset, bringing it in line with the Pro models and enhancing update longevity. Increased RAM in the base model also signifies improved performance.

The iPhone 16 has seen noteworthy improvements in its camera system, including the newly introduced Camera Control feature. While it lacks some advanced features of the Pro models, it offers a highly customizable photographic experience, which is unprecedented for Apple’s base models.

However, the standard iPhone 16 lacks a zoom lens and a high-refresh-rate screen, which are exclusive to the Pro models, providing a 5x lens and a smoother display.

For those seeking a high-end iPhone without purchasing the largest model, the iPhone 16 Pro has been upgraded with a 5x zoom, a Camera Control button, and enhanced camera capabilities thanks to the new A18 Pro chipset.

Regarding battery longevity, the iPhone 16 Plus offers an extended battery life thanks to its larger size, making it capable of lasting into a second day with regular use.

In the lower price range, the iPhone 14 is now available at a reduced price of $599. While not the latest model, it offers substantial features like improved camera capabilities, Emergency SOS via satellite, and a good return on investment expected to last several years in software updates.

For users desiring a home button, the 2022 iPhone SE remains available. It maintains the traditional Touch ID and home button design but at the expense of screen size and some modern technological advancements typically found in newer models.

Apple’s iPhone 15, priced at $699 post the iPhone 16 introduction, remains a viable choice for budget-conscious consumers, despite being ineligible for future Apple Intelligence features. However, its larger variant, the iPhone 14 Plus, also reduced to $699, promises extended battery life, albeit without the latest features like the Dynamic Island or Camera Control.
