Disney has released the first official trailer for Tron: Ares, which presents a setting distinct from what Tron enthusiasts might expect. The depicted world extends beyond the confines of the original, as seen in the trailer, which illustrates rogue programs and their light cycles escaping the game world to partake in a high-speed pursuit with real police, demolishing a police car effortlessly with a light wall. Another scene features a foreboding red-lit structure descending from the sky, symbolizing the fusion of the virtual realm with reality.
Although it has been 15 years since the reboot of Tron: Legacy, Tron: Ares continues the storyline as a standalone sequel. This third installment of the franchise delves deeper into the original narrative by introducing Ares, played by Jared Leto, an AI program on a mysterious mission. While the nature of this mission remains uncertain, the historically significant red circuit color is usually associated with system enforcers, hinting at Ares’ possible rogue tendencies.
The film additionally stars Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger (a recognizable surname for fans), Greta Lee as Eve Kim, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson, and the return of Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn. While Jeff Bridges’ character isn’t visible in the trailer, his voice is heard stating, "Ready? Cause there’s no going back."
Although Daft Punk is not scoring this film, Nine Inch Nails, led by Trent Reznor, has taken on the musical responsibilities, offering a compelling alternative as suggested by the trailer’s soundtrack.
Tron: Ares is scheduled for release in theaters on October 10.
