The Trump administration is reportedly contemplating new restrictions on the Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek. These measures would potentially limit DeepSeek’s ability to purchase Nvidia’s AI chips and restrict Americans from accessing its AI services, according to The New York Times.
This consideration forms part of the Trump administration’s broader initiative to compete with China in the field of artificial intelligence. U.S. officials are evaluating various strategies to curtail China’s access to American technologies and consumer markets, a move that follows DeepSeek’s recent impact on both Silicon Valley and Wall Street.
Additionally, on a preceding Tuesday, the White House advanced its efforts to limit Nvidia’s AI chip sales to China, thereby reinforcing regulations initially established by the Biden administration.
DeepSeek has witnessed a surge in popularity among U.S. AI developers recently, driven by the startup’s competitive pricing which has prompted Silicon Valley to reduce the costs of their advanced AI models.
However, questions persist regarding whether DeepSeek engaged in intellectual property theft to develop some of its more competitive models. OpenAI has accused the Chinese lab of misappropriating its models, allegedly violating OpenAI’s terms of use.
