Valve has removed a video game from its Steam online store following reports from users that a free demo version was installing malware on their devices. The game in question, Sniper: Phantom’s Resolution, was marketed as offering players “realistic first-person shooter mechanics, dynamic storytelling, and high-stakes missions,” based on an archived version of its Steam page.
Initial reports suggesting that the game’s free demo might contain malware emerged earlier this week from several Reddit users who had downloaded and analyzed the demo. The removal of the game from Steam was initially reported by TheGamer.
This incident follows a similar occurrence last month when Valve had to remove another game, PirateFi, from the platform. That game was found to contain malware designed to steal player passwords, a type of malicious software classified as an “info-stealer.”
Valve has not issued any comments in response to this situation.
