Windblown Highlights the Fun of Multiplayer Roguelikes

Many of the most popular roguelikes, such as Hades, Balatro, and Dead Cells, are designed for single players. However, Windblown, a new roguelike from Motion Twin, the creators of Dead Cells, demonstrates the unique appeal of playing a roguelike with others.

In Windblown, players take on the role of charming animal adventurers, like an axolotl or a bat, who are launched from a cannon into a massive tornado to battle through various zones. Similar to Dead Cells, up to two main weapons can be equipped, typically featuring one for short-range and another for long-distance attacks. Each weapon allows the execution of a combo called an “Alterattack,” a special move derived from the other weapon.

An example of gameplay involves using a crossbow for long-range attacks and pairing it with a giant heavy blade. The blade, rarely used alone, provides an Alterattack that cracks open the earth in a straight line, enabling continued long-range combat. This creates a rhythmic pattern of firing arrows and strategically timing the Alterattack, which remains engaging even after extended play.

Windblown recently launched in early access, offering more than a dozen unlockable weapons, allowing for diverse combinations. With four distinct biomes to explore during a run, there is much to discover.

The game’s multiplayer features have made it a standout addition to the regular rotation of roguelikes favored for relaxation. Multiplayer lobbies, unlocked early in the game, allow teams of three players to embark on full runs. Communication through voice and text chat is optional, as many players rely on in-game emojis. The ability to name lobbies enhances player interaction, exemplified by a lobby named “help me get 1st win,” which attracted assistance from other players, though victory remained elusive.

Solo playing in Windblown tends to be cautious and strategic, focusing on weapon use and positioning to deal with aggressive enemies while dodging attacks. Multiplayer battles, in contrast, are faster and more vibrant, offering enjoyable chaotic encounters. The support of a team provides confidence, knowing teammates are ready to assist when needed.

Currently, a plethora of excellent roguelikes are available, including Hades II with its recent major update, the addictive Balatro which is now accessible on mobile, and Shogun Showdown, a game many are yet to fully appreciate. For Windblown to stand out amidst its competition, it required more than just the reputation of Motion Twin, and thus far, its multiplayer component has proven to be its most compelling feature.
