Windows 11 Introduces Passkey Design with Cloud Sync and 1Password Integration

Microsoft is set to significantly enhance its support for passkeys in Windows 11. The upcoming changes include a redesigned Windows Hello interface, allowing users to choose how to store their passkeys. Users will have the option to sync their passkeys with their Microsoft account or use services like 1Password, Bitwarden, and other passkey providers.

Additionally, a new API is being introduced for third-party password and passkey managers, enabling developers to integrate directly with the Windows 11 platform. This integration will facilitate the use of the same passkey from a mobile device for authentication on a PC. While current applications already offer some authentication methods, such as QR codes, Microsoft’s comprehensive support aims to enhance the passkeys experience on Windows.

Microsoft is also updating the Windows Hello prompt, incorporating the ability to set up passkey syncing with a Microsoft account or alternative storage options. After a one-time setup, users will be able to authenticate using facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN across multiple Windows 11 devices.

The new passkey features will initially be available to Windows Insiders in the coming months, indicating it will take some time before all Windows 11 users have access. Microsoft intends to provide further information about these enhancements at its Windows security sessions during the Authenticate 2024 conference next week.
