YouTube is launching dedicated pages for verified news sources in order to combat the spread of false information. The platform is aware of the large number of young people who rely on social networks for news consumption and aims to provide a curated experience for them. These pages will aggregate videos, live broadcasts, podcasts, and Shorts from authoritative sources, allowing viewers to deep dive into multiple sources and angles. The feature is currently available on the mobile application in 40 countries, with plans for integration on the web version and YouTube Living Room app in the future.
In addition to the dedicated news pages, YouTube is also launching the “Shorts Innovation Program for News.” This program aims to help news organizations enhance their short-form video capabilities through financial grants and support. Currently, 20 organizations in 10 countries are involved and will receive a total of $1.6 million in funding. YouTube will be working with partners like Univision in the US, AFP in France, and Mediacorp in Singapore to develop their Shorts content strategy and video production best practices.
This initiative by YouTube showcases its commitment to providing reliable news content and creating a space where users can access accurate information easily. By partnering with verified news sources and supporting their short-form video efforts, YouTube hopes to promote trustworthy journalism and combat the spread of misinformation on its platform.
