Biden administration surveilling Americans’ financial transactions for political keywords, including ‘MAGA’ and ‘Trump,’ post-Jan. 6 riots

The Biden Administration has faced criticism following the revelation that the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) in the Treasury Department monitored the financial transactions of Americans for keywords such as ‘MAGA’, ‘Trump’, and ‘Kamala’ after the January 6 riots. Federal investigators instructed banks to examine records in search of ‘extremists’, causing widespread concern over privacy and civil liberties. In a letter from the Treasury Department to Senator Tim Scott, it was disclosed that ‘Exchange events’ began ‘shortly after January 6’ under the previous Administration. The government was noted to be surveilling Trump supporters and certain American consumers, including those who shopped at outdoor stores like Cabela’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods, as well as individuals who purchased religious texts such as the Bible.

The letter sent to Senator Tim Scott signifies the first public admission by the Biden Administration acknowledging the surveillance of specific keywords following the January 6 events. The revelation has stirred major backlash from Republicans, with Senator Scott expressing concerns over the privacy violations and improper targeting of American citizens without due process. While FinCEN was implemented to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing, it’s now under scrutiny for overstepping its intended purpose. The controversy has prompted calls for accountability and transparency regarding the government’s surveillance tactics, igniting debates over fundamental rights and constitutional protections in the wake of ongoing political tensions.

Furthermore, reported documentation revealed that FinCEN alerted financial institutions that the purchase of religious texts or subscriptions to news outlets with ‘extremist’ views could serve as indicators for investigation. This broadened scope of scrutiny has raised alarms about potential abuse of power and infringements on individual freedoms. The revelations have sparked demands for answers and explanations from the Biden administration, especially in the context of potential political motivations for the surveillance activities. The FinCEN controversy has intensified concerns about the boundaries of government surveillance and the impact on the privacy rights of American citizens.
