The Global Music Diplomacy Initiative was launched in Washington, DC by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the Recording Academy, and other music industry leaders. The initiative aims to use music as a diplomatic tool to promote global peace and democracy. It was developed in accordance with the PEACE Through Music Diplomacy Act and will bring together artists, organizations, and professionals from around the world to advance mutual understanding through music.
As part of the launch event, renowned music producer Quincy Jones was awarded the first-ever Peace through Music Award. The award recognizes individuals or groups in the American music industry who have made significant contributions to cross-cultural exchanges and the advancement of peace globally. Jones, who has had a career spanning seven decades, has worked in various roles including composer, producer, conductor, and humanitarian. He has earned a record 80 Grammy Award nominations and 28 wins.
In addition to the Global Music Diplomacy Initiative, the American Music Mentorship Program (AMMP) was also announced. Created in partnership between the US Department of State and the Recording Academy, AMMP will bring mid-career international artists and music industry professionals to the US for mentorship and networking opportunities. The program is set to begin in the fall of 2024. Both initiatives highlight the belief in the power of music to bring people together and create understanding, with the goal of promoting peace and global unity.
